Mountain Climbing

We were meant to go mountain climbing at Easter however it didn’t quite work out so we decided to go over the Labour Day long weekend in May. We picked up a hire car and drove up early Saturday morning to the bottom of Scafell Pike which is in the Lakes District. It was a beautiful day with barley a cloud in the sky and the sun shining. We had lunch and started up the hill, let’s just say that when they say it will take you 5 hrs it really does. Scafell Pike is 978m and is very steep we started at the Wasdale side of the mountain and there are two paths up the top. One is a lot less steep than the other. We decide to walk up the less steep one and down the very steep one. However that might have not been the best idea!!

Walking up we moved over an awful path which had been built to help stop the erosion of people walking up and down the mountain but actually makes it really hard to walk on. Once we had got from the top the view was amazing it was totally clear and you could see for ages. It was also freezing at about 1 or 2 degrees on top of the mountain with a strong wind. After a small break we headed down the steeper sloped walk. After clambering down the hillside without a path we got to the saddle between two hills and realized that in going down the very steep slope meant climbing down a 45o angle slope with lose rubble all over it. After clambering down we walked our way down the rest of the hill. 5hrs later we were back down to the car park and off to our hotel to pass out.

The next day we were up again diving off to Snowdon in Wales to climb the next mountain. It was a really enjoyable drive there as all of the lambs were out and it was fun to watch them run around in the fields getting up to trouble. We got there just after lunch and started up the 1085m high mountain.

Climbing Snowdon by itself would probably have been ok however as we had just climbed the mountain yesterday and so our legs were just a little bit sore… Again the weather was fantastic. It was a little windier today and halfway up it did hail although that was much better than if it had rained but it was clear and sunny patches. The route up the hill we had decided to take seemed to be everyone else's choice as well as we were unable to find a park anywhere near the start of the route. Plan B was following the railway up the hillside. This path was much better than Scafell Pike which made the walk a bit easier. When we got to the top it was freezing again and this time we did not stay up the top very long as we wanted to get down and home to sleep. Scott was a speed demon and I had to run to keep up with him most of the way down. After some dinner we headed back to London and arrived quite late at night tired and quite sore.
