Belgium and Luxembourg

Day 1

We set off on the Eurostar to Brussels and once there jumped straight on a train to Luxembourg. We got to there just after lunch and after checking in at our hostel we headed out to explore the city.
Luxembourg is a beautiful city, it sits on the top of a cliff and overlooks the surrounding landscape. We took a self guided
walking tour around the city and surrounding parks. The city is quite small but picturesque and it was lovely to spend the afternoon walking around its streets and gardens.

It was also full of life as we became part of a crowd in a advertisement being filmed in the town's centre. There was a big festival on for the end of the Tour de France and everyone was out enjoying champagne, beer and sausages while watching a series of children’s cycling races. We ate dinner in the square while watching some interesting local performers put on a show.

Day 2

The next day we caught the train back to Brussels. We had an interesting welcome to the city, on the way to our hotel we came across a cordoned off area and an army of police and firemen were all looking at a derelict building while other firemen broke all the windows. Apparently 400 illegal immigrants were cleared out of the building that morning!

After checking in we walked into the centre of town, got some food ate lunch in one of the squares. We then walked around the central square and the oldest shopping mall in the world and down a street full of restaurants and were pretty much finished. Brussels is actually not that nice it is very run down and I would suggest that unless you are desperate to see it avoid going. We spent the rest of the day relaxing in the hotel.

Day 3

We got up early and headed of to Brugge today. Our hostel was awful. It was the worst hostel that we had stayed in around Europe. Our aim then was to spend as little time as possible there so we headed out immediately and walked around the beautiful town. Surrounded by chocolate and waffles we wandered through the shops and local market in beautiful sunshine.

We had dinner at this very nice Italian restaurant. Brugge is knows as the Venice of the north so we thought it appropriate. We then went out to a pub that has over 300 varieties of beer to try some. After di
scovering that beer in Belgium is a lot more alcoholic than England and meeting some hilarious locals and numerous expats.

On the way home more to avoid going into our hostel we ate chips in the main square (a traditional apparently) and watched a concert of a local rock band that we couldn't understand but kept us entertained for awhile.

Day 4

It rained today. We went for a walk to the windmills and along the canals in the morning and headed off to the chocolate factory. Being so famous for chocolate we thought it appropriate. It was actually really good and we got free samples at the end which is always good. We then went to watch some toffee pulling and had more hot chocolate which was really good. On the way to the train station we went through the largest second hand/ antiques market I have ever seen. It would have been good to have a look around however we had to get to the train.

We took the train back to Brussels and went into the Eurostar lounge to relax before the trip back to London. Scott went a little crazy in the lounge. It was like a kid in a candy store. He could not sit still, he ate one or more of everything, he stated every beer in the fridge and basically went mad. After that the trip back to London was quite uneventful.
