We planned to spend the 4 days over Easter based in Cambridge with our friends hire a car and get out and about in East Anglia. I went up to Cambridge on Thursday night Scott still being stuck in Paris for work. After inspecting the hire car and having a nice dinner we went to bed to get up the next morning ready to go.
After a small lie in we
headed of to Sutton Hoo which is the site of a Saxon burial ground. On our way to site the grey day (typical England) turned in to a rainy day (even more typical). We hoped out of the car and it was freezing. We booked ourselves on a tour of the site and headed off to the museum to have look around (and get warm) while we were waiting for it to start. The tour started and was very interesting they told us about how life would have been in the area and why they think they buried people on this site etc etc. The only problem was that about a quarter of the way through the tour it started sleeting. So here we were standing out in the cold freezing our butts off with a feerce wind and snow. It was not the most pleasant tour I have had.On the way home we drove by the seaside and had a quick look out over the water before it started raining again. Once we had finished we headed back to the car to warm up thank goodness! Scott arrived that night and we were all excited to start our real holiday the next day.
Day 2
Today we decided to head to Norwich. On the way it was sleeting and lightly snowing the whole way which made the trip quite exciting.
Once we got to Norwich apart from being very cold their appeared to
be a break in the snow/rain. We wandered around the town centre taking the place in and headed up to the castle. Norwich castle is actually quite good. It is quite traditional but shows some really interesting history about Norwich and the castle itself.
After enjoying our time there we went back outside to head back into town. After walking around the markets we set off on our way back home. Along the way we decided to stop off at a few places as the sun was out.
We headed to Thetford forest for a walk in the woods. Along the way we came across my favourite Hairy Coos and after stopping and feeding them for a while we continu
ed on our way for a walk through the forest. When we got back into the car we went to a flint mine where we walked around an area that looked like had had a whole heap of bombs going off. We did get to go down the underground mine and see how the cave men use to dig up the flint for tools.The flint mine was our final stop that day and we head back home.
Day 3
Today we woke up to a white blanket of snow covering Cambridge. This was a
very exciting start to the day and after a bit of running around outside got ready for our day out to Samford.It had also snowed in Stamford although but the time we got there the most of it had melted. It was sunny when we arrived although cold and it was a good sign to set off for a walk around the town. Stamford is really nice and a quaint English market town. As it was Sunday most of the town was closed but that did not stop us exploring the lanes and allies which make it up. After enough looking around we decided to take a drive to see Burley House which is just out of the town.
Burley House is a huge place which is open to the public and has a sculptural garden. Scott and I went in for a look while Ross and Caroline went out for a drive around the countryside. The house was beautiful and well kept however I was more interested in the surrounding gardens and sculpture park. As it was Easter Sunday they had an egg hunt on so Scott and I took great delight in searching for the clues to get out chocolate egg.
After wandering around the gardens looking at all of the artworks we meet up with Caroline and Ross and headed back towards Cambridge. We stopped off in a little town to look at where Ross use to live and for a drink before heading home for the night.
Day 4
The final day of our holiday and we were wondering if it was going to snow again. We got up early all excited and went to the window…. and it had! So all excited again we rugged up ready to go exploring.
One of the main things I wanted to do on this trip was try to see the seals which come onto the beaches in the north of East Anglia we drove up to towards Cromer which is on the coast and it snowed pretty much the whole way. It was pretty amazing to see so much snow. We arrived at the beach it was a little walk to the beach but we hoped out and went hunting for seals. Strangely enough the seals were not crazy enough to come out of the water that day but the b
each was sand which was a great start. The next thing we found it started snowing at the beach so here we are all rugged up and it is snowing on the beach.
After going for a nice walk along the beach we headed back to the car to find fish and chips for lunch. We drove towards Cromer and the snow got heavier! By the time we reached our destination it was sleeting. We walked along the foreshore and the snow and wind were so strong. We headed to the pier so we could walk out to the end and almost got blown off!
We decided it was way to cold we went to find a fish and chip shop. The food was great and we sat watching the snow eating. We headed back to the car and the snow got heavier and after being covered head to foot managed to get in to the car and head back to Cambridge and then London.
